Goodness begins at home to prevent hateful attacks

Re: ‘Our souls are numb:’ Vigil honours victims of anti-Muslim attack — June 9

“Our souls are numb” — how can they possibly not be? A family of three generations has been swept off this earth in the twinkling of an eye. And again, by the hand of prejudice, racism and hate — struck as a sceptre into the heart of humanity, then waved like a flag by a young man of 20, barely into the prime of his life.

Left behind is a nine-year-old son and grandson; the remaining survivor who will leave the hospital asking: Why?

Why does this continue? It is a question that all who live in this country are likely asking. Of themselves, of their leaders and indeed of everyone’s own faith and belief system.

It is so tiresome to hear the familiar words that “we are taking the matter seriously,” and “this must not happen again.” Only when those words are no longer heard will we know they have been put into action.

Goodness should begin at home, and work its way into schools, churches, places of worship and the highest places of government. That is the flag that everyone should be waving.
