Integrity of the decision-making is what leads to the best outcomes

There’s quite a bit of debate lately about electoral reform, with some calling for proportional representation versus our current system of first-past-the-post.

The argument against first-past-thepost is that not all interests are heard. However, proportional representation, in the course of giving voice to everyone, has its own problems.

The ultimate expression of democracy — giving voice to more and more entities — is gridlock.

Imagine that instead of two main parties in Parliament there are six or seven parties, each with an opportunity to voice its concerns.

How would anything get done?

Ask Italy for an answer.

You may think we need those different opinions to arrive at accurate assessments and proper courses of action. However, a quick glance at relevant facts can lead to as accurate an assessment as a deep dive.

It’s not how many people weigh in on a decision. It’s the integrity of the decision-making that leads to the best outcome. As long as we have a few competitive political parties keeping the one in power honest, proper decisions can be made. So let’s stick with our current system and avoid democratic gridlock. Bob Skura
