The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office continued its investigation Friday into the deadly shooting on the film set of a Western the day before, when actor Alec Baldwin shot a firearm being used as a prop, killing the film’s director of photography and wounding its director, authorities said.

Authorities shared few details of how the deadly incident unfolded, leaving it unclear precisely what kind of gun was being used in the film, what it was loaded with and what exactly was happening on the movie set when it was fired.

The results were deadly: The film’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, 42, was killed, and its director, Joel Souza, 48, was injured, said Juan Rios, a spokesperson for the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting took place around 1:50 p.m. local time Thursday on the set of “Rust,” Rios said.

Rios said Thursday that the shooting at Bonanza Creek Ranch, in Santa Fe County, happened in the middle of a scene that was either being rehearsed or filmed. He said the sheriff’s office was interviewing people on the set to determine how the two had been shot.

“We’re trying to determine right now how and what type of projectile was used in the firearm,” he said.

Rios said Thursday night that the Sheriff’s Office had not filed charges against anyone in connection with the shooting.

Hutchins was flown to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she later died, Rios said. Souza was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, but was later released.

Baldwin, 63, issued a statement Friday saying that he was co-operating with the investigation and that his “heart is broken” for Hutchins’ “husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.”
