Agreement for reserve signed
Parks Canada has signed a provisional agreement with two First Nations to establish a new national park reserve on a chain of islands along the northwest coast of Prince Edward Island. The memorandum of understanding signed Wednesday will protect Hog Island Sandhills, described as the province’s last coastal wilderness and one of the most significant coastal dune ecosystems on the East Coast. Known in the Mi’kmaq language as Pituamkek, which means, “at the long sand dune,” the 50-kilometre strip of land has been used by the Mi’kmaq for 4,000 years.
