CAMBRIDGE Cambridge Memorial Hospital says no more surgeries have been cancelled after eight were postponed earlier this week to ensure enough beds for new admissions.

There were 22 admissions from the emergency department on Tuesday, causing a big jump in demand for beds, said hospital spokesperson Stephan Beckhoff.

“Our goal is to have no more than five admissions from the emergency department and treat patients’ ailments accordingly during their stay at the emergency department,” said Beckhoff. “We had to cancel several surgeries this week in order to make sure each admitted patient had a bed.”

Hospital admissions from the emergency department dropped to 13 on Wednesday, which eased some of the strain on the hospital, he said.

Patients with minor ailments waited upwards of 13 hours at the emergency department on Tuesday, which Beckhoff said is much longer than usual.

People who can should go to a walk-in clinic, to ease pressures at the emergency department.
