New voter ID cards on their way following city hall mistake

JEFF OUTHIT JOUTHIT@THERECORD.COM

City of Waterloo residents will be mailed new voter ID cards for the Oct. 24 lection after city hall failed to include neighbourhood voting stations on cards it mailed earlier.

The cards already delivered to homes direct municipal voters to just a handful of central voting stations, rather than to polling stations in their neighbourhood. People can still vote at the few locations listed on cards they have received. But many people would have to travel farther and face longer waits at busier stations compared to voting closer to home.

“For convenience and to avoid crowds, voters may prefer the location closer to their own neighbourhood,” the city said Wednesday.

Replacement cards will be mailed next week. They are expected to arrive in time for the municipal election. You don’t need a voter ID card to vote, but having one makes the process faster. Cards already delivered have the correct information for advance voting.

You can verify voting locations at waterloo.ca/elections under “when and where to vote.”
