Land Back Camp, Region of Waterloo mark partnership in community garden

Land Back Camp and the Region of Waterloo marked their partnership in a community garden at Schneider Haus in Kitchener on Sunday.

The garden will be used to grow such things as spices, herbs, tomatoes, peppers, carrots and the “three sisters — beans, corn and squash,” said Bangishimo, a local Indigenous activist with Land Back Camp.

In June 2020, O:se Kenhionhata:tie, known as Land Back Camp, was created by Amy Smoke, Bangishimo, and Terre Chartrand in Victoria Park in Kitchener.

“We are a group of TwoSpirit IndigiQueer folx and queer/trans or LGBTQ+ settler accomplices gathering in the Great Peace to celebrate, learn, and thrive in our cultures,” Land Back Camp says on its website.

“We represent several Nations living under the peace of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum, and the Two Row Wampum. Our summer programming has included Elder visits, medicine walks, food sovereignty gardens, arts workshops, and community feasts to name a few.”
